leri valley mixed mine
Location
SN 674(76) 884(08)
Directions
You will need an O/S map – the mine entrance is on a public footpath which is actually a “track” running through a small woodland. Look to the right and you will see obvious spoil areas covered with grass/trees. There are two adits but one is blocked although you can get to the inside of it from the other.
Access
Ungated and Unknown.
Suggested Equipment
None.
However, there is a very deep internal shaft which would need to be fully rigged for SRT if descent was required
Length
Unknown BUT, about 1/3 mile of passages are available on the upper level.
There is a wall of stacked deads with a railway line running under it suggesting that part of the mine was closed off earlier. The actual length is therefore unknown.
Flood Risk
Unlikely. There is water to, just over, wellie depth (as usual) at the entrance. However, there is an open shaft inside the mine and any rise in water level would cause the water to flow down that shaft. The mine is high up on a hillside. Flood risk is low.
Mine Attributes
Lead or silver.
Description
The mine is both interesting and uninteresting.
There are numerous passages inside the adit akin to a small warren and they are all dry once you pass the entrance water.
A wall of stacked deads blocks an obvious older part of the mine but this would have to be disassembled in part to allow passage beyond.
There is a “shaft” in the centre of the mine with an old, rotting wooden ladder attached to the side. This ladder cannot be reached form the top as it has rotted away. The O/S map shows the “mine” as being further down the hill by a river bank but a thorough search of that area failed to find an adit which suggests it has now gone. There may, of course, be additional workings at a lower level.
There were no mineral intrusions or formations at all in the upper level.
A second surface adit was blocked on the outside but it was easy to find on the inside.
Unexplored Passages
The lower workings are unexplored (accessed via the internal shaft)
The hidden (older) workings behind the stacked deads are unexplored.
