I found this little adit on a wander on Friday evening ...

DSCF4179.JPG

The water was over wellie depth so I dropped the level by around 4 inches

DSCF4182.JPG

Easy to see the watermark further into the adit

I can't seem to upload the last two piccies ....

The adit was off a footpath (I followed a stream upwards to a likely looking area) - I was near Bryn Rhyd Yr Arian having a wander.

The entrance was over wellie depth but a swift drainage channel quickly dropped the level by a few inches.

I thought it was going to be a trial as there is nothing at all marked on the map - no level, no mine, no tip - nothing - but it wasn't. It was actually a small mine.

Inside it was a surprise, it went for around 300 metres with numerous spurs all blocked with stacked deads except one which was passable although I did not crawl though.

The passage had some decorations - possibly iron/copper. Some calcium straws were forming.

I could not guess what was being mined here - I would have thought lead but a nearby isolated copper mine might suggest this was copper too although I found no evidence of it.

Rather an odd thing really .... quite a billy bonus for a wander out in the fields though :)

Mike ... it did not look travelled but neither did the mine really. However, I would expect it to be dead (because it was back stacked with deads)

Tim ... Fanks !

Joel ... There is lead in the hills beyond (Llanfair TH) and an isolated pocket of copper nearby. I found no evidence of copper or lead but it must have been one of them.

I am sure it wasn't uranium as I am not glowing green

What a fantastic story! Its like 'The Famous Five' just stumbling upon an ancient underground passageway.....

I assume that anyone could unload the fillings and make a hole beyond.

Where is the location - or is that a secret?

It is near Bryn Rhyd Yr Arian between Henllan and Llanfair TH. It isn't a secret as the adit is open but I do not know who the landowner is otherwise I would ask.

If anyone really wants to go I will put the grid ref (and directions) in the private area.

I also guess anyone could remove the stacked deads but I expect the passages beyond will be dead (which is why they were usually stacked)

;)

Chuck us some Grid references, I think Turbo is looking for something new, as am I.
You want me to go down *there*? On a bloody *rope*?

You can see a waterfall on the O/S map - it is near there but before it. Follow the marked footpath along the river (might be a bridleway actually) and you will see (near the co-ords) a stream and field boundary at 90 degrees - walk UP that - the adit is along there and is not obvious until you have practically arrived.

Water at the entrance was just over wellie depth when I was there so I lowered it a bit.

Good luck

:)

'Fraid not :(

It's quite a long "adit",in fact,it is actually a mine. It certainly isn't a trial and there is plenty of "activity" in there.

I seem to remember discovering it's actual name but a quick look on ME and google failed to find it .... it will defo have a proper name though.

:)
