Whilst wandering around the mine this last weekend (2nd Sept 12) I noticed a subtle but distinct smell of parma voilets/pear drops/acetone in a tunnel section and also an adjoining open section where there was a light fall of water.

The others didn't notice it (except JohnO who seemed to struggle detecting it) because they had buggered off elsewhere.

I have been unable to find any reference to what might cause this aroma in a mine (mineral/chemical reaction) and wondered if anyone has any thoughts ...

The aroma was localised and we (myself and JohnO) passed the area twice and the smell remained.

I have posted on Aditnow too;

Thoughts anyone ?
