Was up this area today, up in the woods theres various holes that are fenced off
Anyone know if there is anything worth looking at ? Aka Ian do you know anything about this area ?

There are two caves worth looking at (assuming you were off Tan y Goppa road). They are in Cris Ebbs book ...

One is open and not very big but does have an abandoned dig which looks promising.

The other is gated (perhaps the one you saw?) but is hard to get to in any event, being halfway up the cliff face. I can only imagine it was gated because it was "good".

Must be worth a look if ever the gate can be opened

We were parked off tan y goppa opposite a gate house to the castle grounds
Oooo didnt see anything gated, wouldnt mind finding that
There was a information sign thingy which said that the area was mined for lead

The gated one is quite easy to get to Ian, if it's the same one, a footpath runs past it (its a fenced off stope) I never got round to going into it though. There are a fair few blackbirds that hang upside down in there.

The workings there date from the Roman period. Similar dating to the mines here

I grew up in Abergele and know the Tan Y Gopa area really well. I'd always be up for joining you on a trip and showing you around. The fenced off stope is directly in-line with what looks like either a fault line or collapsed tunnel higher up the mountain. Then higher up again there are some roman steps along side a deep ravine which I reckon drops down to a similar depth to the gated entrance just off Tan y Gopa road.

I can remember throwing stones down there as a kid and it used to take about 60 seconds for the stones to come to a rest. On the left of the roman steps is a very short cave that travels upwards to a higher point on the mountain.

Moving further along the path is a bridge which was installed about 15 years ago which crosses the ravine. Prior to the bridge you used to have to balance across a narrow log. Skirting around the side of the bridge would probably be the best way of gaining access, but I would recommend going attached to a rope because there isn't much to stop you if you slip.

If it's not chucking it down in the morning, I'll try and get up there to take some pictures.

Hi Dan, I'm only free till 11am tomorrow and busy all day Sunday, If you're in the area any way it would be great to meet up for an early morning adventure and go for a look. If you're not in the area this weekend, I can do Sunday 9th Dec and we could make a day of it? perhaps doing Abergele then going for a look around Dyserth or somewhere?

not really worth me heading over for just the morning, i am free on the weekend of the 9th, but we are doing P8 that weekend, but i suspect that will be on the saturday though, so sunday the 9th should be fine.
